Roundtable: “Long Live the Matadors – History of the Texas Tech Masked Rider”

Last Updated: September 1, 2026By

Stacy Stockard Caliva is a former Texas Tech Masked Rider (2004 – 2005) and has chronicled a beautiful coffee table book of the history of this beloved Texas Tech tradition. George Tate ’37 shocked football fans when he and a trusty palomino led the football team onto the field.

The prank happened several times, but on January 1, 1954, Joe Kirk Fulton rode into the Gator Bowl atop a black horse and became the university’s official mascot.

Stacy received her Juris Doctor (JD) and Master’s Degrees from Texas Tech and is the director of communications and marketing at the Texas Tech Office of Advancement.
